Trail Beers: Creature Comforts Tropicalia

September 14, 2016

Based in Athens, GA, Creature Comforts has been crushing the craft beer game for the past couple of years. Housed in 13,000 sq ft warehouse, this local brewery produces year round and limited run cans – both of which can be hard to come by. After receiving high praise for being an extremely refreshing and juicy IPA, Creature Comforts had a hard time keeping up with demand for their highly sought after Tropicalia immediately after its release. Stores around Atlanta find it difficult to keep it in stock, allowing customers one six pack per person and cases of the brew lasting only about 30 minutes in most shops, even to this day. Limited supply required the brewery to install a new centrifuge in their brewery to keep up with such high demand, hopefully resulting in an increase in volume at our local watering holes.

A pretty clear beer when poured into a glass with a slight orange-ish hue to the body. These crushable cans are packed with lots of tangerine, orange peel and grapefruit zest. It’s VERY citrus forward; a juicy and pulpy brew with minimal hop bitterness to the aroma. A majority of the beer’s scent is reminiscent to fresh oranges from the tree.

It’s definitely one of the more citrus-y beers out there on the market. If you’re looking for that pool-pounder or that go-to thirst quencher after a day on the trails, this is the beer to pack your cooler full of. It’s fresh-squeezed for sure. A huge dose of orange and grapefruit, overwhelmingly juicy and when cold delivers minimal hop flavors. The hop profile is so close to citrus fruit that it becomes hard to distinguish hop bitterness from grapefruit bitterness. Extremely crisp tasting with a lighter malt bill that has a bready flavor and heavy orange and grapefruit rind.
